Shadow Copy (VSS) based software fails on a RAM Disk
Many backup tools use the Windows Shadow Copy service, also known as Volume Shadow Copy Service, Volume Snapshot Service, or VSS. When a RAM disk is present in the system, these tools may fail to complete a backup due to the service encountering an error while attempting to back up the RAM disk. This error occurs because Windows treats RAM disks as regular hard disk drives when they act standalone volumes.
To make VSS work correctly, do one of the following:
- Tick Mount as Removable in the RAM Disk's properties. This will make the RAM disk appear as a removable drive, and VSS will exclude it from its operations; or
- Tick Hard Disk Emulation in the RAM Disk's properties. This will emulate a complete hard drive with partitions, and VSS will be able to access the drive.
